JFI Karate Academy invites children, teenagers and women to build confidence, resilience, fitness and practical self-defence skills during the school holidays.
Children and adults across Ilford, Redbridge and neighbouring east London communities are being invited to swap screen time for confidence-building challenges as JFI Karate Academy launches its Building Life Skills Summer Programme.
Led by two-time World Karate Champion and experienced fitness presenter Janice Francis-Irwin, the programme has been created to help participants improve their confidence, concentration, fitness and resilience in a fun, welcoming and supportive environment.
Led by two-time World Karate Champion and experienced fitness presenter Janice Francis-Irwin, the programme has been created to help participants improve their confidence, concentration, fitness and resilience in a fun, welcoming and supportive environment.

Families can experience the programme during a free trial week from Tuesday 28 July to Thursday 30 July, with sessions available at Nuffield Health Club in Ilford and online via Zoom. The programme includes classes for children as young as three, juniors, teenagers and women, with each session combining movement, age-appropriate karate techniques, practical self-defence and activities designed to develop a positive Champion Mindset.
Fitness is one of the cornerstones of the JFI Karate Academy approach. Janice has worked in the fitness industry for more than 30 years and brings her experience as a fitness presenter into the Academy’s teaching, helping participants develop strength, coordination, stamina and a healthier relationship with movement alongside their martial arts skills. She is also a four-time European Karate Champion and former Great Britain Women’s Team Captain, and says the programme is about giving people skills that would support them far beyond the dojo.
She explained: “Confidence is not something people are simply born with. It is built through challenge, encouragement and achievement. Many parents tell us that their children are finding it difficult to focus, spending too much time on screens or struggling with confidence and motivation. Others simply have lots of energy and need a positive place to direct it. Our summer programme gives children and adults the opportunity to get active, make new friends, learn valuable skills and discover what they are capable of achieving.
Fitness has always been a major part of my life and my teaching. After more than 30 years in the fitness industry, I understand that people need more than technical karate instruction. They need to develop strength, coordination, resilience and the confidence to keep challenging themselves. You do not need any previous karate experience, and you do not have to be naturally confident or sporty. We meet every participant where they are and help them take that next step.”
Participants who join the full Summer Programme on their free trial day will receive a 10% discount. Every programme is designed to help participants build confidence and self-belief, improve focus and concentration, increase fitness, strength and coordination, learn practical self-defence skills, develop resilience and a Champion Mindset and make new friends while having fun.
Janice added: “Karate can help children become more disciplined and focused, but it can also help them find their voice, believe in themselves and deal with challenges in a positive way. For women, learning self-defence and improving fitness can be incredibly empowering. The sessions are supportive, friendly and suitable for beginners, so nobody needs to feel nervous about coming along.”
